Boies Schiller Flexner - Hudson Yards, New York, NY

Law Firm Based in New York City

Spacesmith was hired by the law firm Boies Schiller Flexner (BSF) as the executive architect for their new headquarters in the Hudson Yards development. Our team collaborated closely with design architect Schiller Projects to bring the vision for the four-story office space to life. The project aimed to break away from the traditional, hierarchical layout of law offices, creating a more dynamic environment that encourages collaboration, communication, and innovation.

To foster this shift in office culture, the design reimagines the typical legal office layout. Partner offices, traditionally located in corner spaces, are now positioned along the building's core. These offices feature floor-to-ceiling glass enclosures, recessed lighting, and custom curvilinear concrete walls, reflecting a modern and open approach to workplace design.

Located on the 19th floor, a spacious 4,000 sq ft multi-purpose cafeteria features an on-site barista. The space is adaptable, with an operable partition that can transform it from a large all-staff assembly area into smaller, more intimate rooms for training sessions or meetings. Formal meeting rooms are interconnected with cozy huddle spaces and a tranquil "library," a quiet retreat for employees.

A central open staircase links floors 19 through 21, encouraging movement and interaction among employees. Hanging from this staircase is a striking sculpture made of overlapping metal beads, which visually connects the main reception area to the upper floors. This grand installation stands in contrast to the surrounding monolithic curved concrete walls and sleek black terrazzo flooring.

Spacesmith was very good in partnering with us, and the contractor, on problem solving what was a very unique design project with a very unique set of challenges. There were a ton of surprises that came up during construction, but Spacesmith did not let us down in any way and met what we thought were their obligations on the project.
